Getting antsy about making the Volvo drive

I’ve had a wrench thrown in my plans of resurrecting the Volvo, in the form of my mechanic having part of his shop catch fire. The unit beside him burned completely, and the fire came through his wall, burning down most of the wall and a lot of the ceiling. Tons of smoke and water damage, lots of equipment that needs replaced. And what took the brunt of it was the second unit they just took over and finished painting and setting up a lift in. Plus he’s going for a knee replacement next week, so I can’t bring the Volvo to him for another month and a half at least. I don’t really have anywhere else to take it, either. I don’t know of any other Volvo specialists around who worked on 140s when they were knew, and have owned a couple.

Anyways, there’s nothing I can do about any of that. But on Saturday I’ll pick up a new fuel pump that a Volvo dealer managed to source locally, and then I should have it running on Saturday or Sunday. If I get it running well, I’ll try and make a plan to have it ready for a trip to Saskatoon at the end of July....

Damn, that sucks on the shop front. Hoping your mechanic a speedy recovery from surgery!

Also, what brings you to Stoon? And if you’re going to be here on a weekend, most of the time on Saturday or Sunday nights, people just cruise 8th Street in classic cars.

Yeah, awful timing with them just finishing that unit. And no business for at least 3 weeks, maybe a month.

My significant others cousin is getting married, so we’re road tripping over 3 days to do a bunch of sightseeing, and then the wedding, and then wandering around rural sask with her parents to see her relatives places and such.

We will be around for a weekend, so we’ll definitely have to go check that out. Or take part if we’re in the Volvo.

If you two want to get away on a date, I usually recommend the Berry Barn. Nice spot with good food. And stay out of the alphabet streets: the further towards x you get, the worse it gets.

That does look cool, I’ll keep that one in mind. And thank you for the advice haha. Are there streets that are just named with letters?

Yup. B through X. Used to work all through that area for the courts, I wouldn’t recommend driving through (other than maybe on 22nd or 33rd ) and certainly not after nightfall.

Huh. There’s nowhere like that really in Vancouver. You have to go to Surrey for that kind of sketch. Similar to Winnipeg, there were areas that we were told to not go through, and definitely not leave the truck parked there.

Really? The Downtown Eastside doesn’t have that reputation anymore?

And yeah, north end of Winnipeg is sketchy.

Oh it definitely has a reputation, but it’s all pretty much harmless homeless people. Not dangerous, just an uncomfortable area. Fine to park your car nearby, but don’t leave a bike, that’ll definitely get stolen.

Car break-ins happen near halfway houses usually.

Please make a video of you fixing it, starting it, driving it, and completing the journey. My first car was a ‘72 Volvo 142, and this resurrection might make me whole.

I’ll definitely video the first start in 5 years, but I don’t know how much of the fixing I can video. I’ve also already done most of what there is to do to make it run. I can definitely make some driving videos as well though, and there will be plenty of posts if it winds up being our ride to Saskatoon
